CA Controversial Gambling Measure

Sports betting is prohibited by federal law in 46 states and that means CA residents that wager on sports must either do it illegally or go to Nevada's race and sports books.

CA lawmakers are now considering passing a controversial gambling measure that would legalize betting at licensed gaming establishments - racetracks and tribal casinos. California State Senator Roderick Wright authored the measure.

"Wright authored the bill because he believes California residents should be able to wager on sports," said Paul Donahue, a consultant for Sen. Roderick Wright. "Another reason was to help the horse racing industry, card rooms, tribal casinos and generate revenue for the state."

The measure has brought concern from the California Tribal Business Alliance. David Quintana, political director for the tribes, said there are serious concerns about the measure; will it be good for the tribes?

"That is a very dangerous proposition for tribes," Quintana said. "I expect we will offer some more restrictions to the bill."

How will the federal government react if the measure progresses to allow the new regulations? There are many questions unanswered but the amount of money in play could push legalized sports betting into a reality in the near future, the American Gaming Association reports that illegal sports gambling is a more than $300 billion industry nationwide.
