Reid's Online Poker Push

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has been pushing to legalize online poker during Congress's lame-duck session. It's got the potential...

to allow all hell to break loose since some state officials feel their efforts to legalize some forms of online gaming in their states could be preempted by the federal government with the big concern being how their lotteries would be affected by Reid's bill.

A committee director at the National Conference of State Legislatures James Ward said his members were frustrated by Reid's proposal.

“It’s frustrating because they are overseeing a successful stewardship of the gaming industry,” Ward told The Hill. “It’s not clear why any federal intervention is necessary. ... It’s a sensitive topic for the states any time you talk about preemption.”
